Kim Melrose Designer Pillows was born not from a business plan, but from a designer’s frustration—and a lifelong passion for beautiful, well-crafted interiors.
Before entering the world of design, Kim Melrose spent many years in the corporate world before transitioning into real estate, where he quickly became known not only for successful sales, but for his exceptional eye for design. Having bought, furnished, and sold many homes of his own, Kim developed a reputation for creating interiors so compelling that buyers often purchased the homes fully furnished. Again and again, clients noticed: the spaces didn’t just look good—they felt complete.
In 1998, that reputation turned into opportunity when clients began asking Kim to stage their homes for sale. The results were immediate and dramatic. Homes sold faster and for higher prices. Word spread. Neighbors called. Soon, Kim founded California Staging & Design, a company that continues to operate today, while his real estate and design work grew side by side.
Over time, clients began hiring Kim not just to stage, but to fully design and furnish their homes—even when they weren’t selling. Without formal training, but guided by instinct, experience, and an uncompromising standard for quality, Kim naturally evolved into a sought-after interior designer.
The turning point came when a close friend opened a furniture consignment showroom in Rancho Mirage and invited Kim to open a design office inside the space. The partnership flourished. Kim furnished clients’ homes using pieces from the showroom—but one problem kept coming up again and again: finding truly beautiful, high-quality designer pillows in the quantities real projects required was nearly impossible.
So Kim did what designers do—he solved the problem himself.
He began sourcing luxury fabrics from the Los Angeles fabric district and working with California workrooms to create custom pillows exclusively for his projects. At first, they lived on a few chrome racks in the corner of his office, reserved only for client installations. But customers kept asking to buy them. At first, he said no. Then one day, he said yes.
That single “yes” changed everything.
Demand grew quickly. More racks. More pillows. More fabrics. More workrooms. Before long, Kim Melrose Designer Pillows had become a full-scale business—serving not only retail clients, but interior designers throughout the region. Today, more than 70 designers source their pillows from Kim Melrose Designer Pillows for their own projects.
The company now maintains a large inventory—thousands of pillows in stock—allowing same-day shipping for online orders and immediate purchase for showroom customers in Rancho Mirage. Every pillow is handcrafted in California using carefully selected designer textiles, with a focus on quality, craftsmanship, and timeless design.
Today, Kim’s role is exactly what it was at the beginning: constantly searching for exceptional fabrics, refining the collection, and ensuring every pillow meets the standards of a designer who still approaches every space the same way he always has—with an eye for beauty, balance, and detail.
